Note to Senator Daschle
Dear Sen. Daschle,
I hate to be petty, but, may I bring your attention to a short excerpt from your recent press
conference in which you compared conservative talk radio to foreign religious fanatics:
“...somebody says something and then it becomes a little more shrill the next time and then
more shrill the next time and pretty soon it’s a foment that becomes physical in addition to
just verbal...”
According to The Living Webster Encyclopedic Dictionary, the word foment is a transitive
verb which means to foster; to promote or encourage; or to instigate.
Now I know this is semantic nit-picking. However, I do believe that the proper use of
language is very important if you want to clearly articulate your ideas.
